Fenghuang Ancient Town凤凰古城

Fenghuang Ancient Town sits in Fenghuang County, within the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in western Hunan. Founded during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is a National Famous Historical and Cultural City, often paired with Shanxi's Pingyao and summed up as 'north has Pingyao, south has Fenghuang'. The core old town spans about 10 square kilometres, with 68 surviving heritage buildings, 116 ancient sites and over 120 Ming-Qing-style dwellings, threaded by the Tuo River and lined with stacked stilt houses. It is the birthplace of the writer Shen Congwen, whose novel Border Town made this little place a literary home for generations of Chinese readers; the late-Qing and Republican-era statesman Xiong Xiling also came from here. Some 15 km outside town lies the only Great Wall in southern China — the Miao Frontier Wall, stretching some 190 km. Today the old town's tourism is fully mature, while the Miao villages and mountain forests beyond keep the slower rhythm of Xiangxi.

• Shen Congwen's former residence sits on Zhongying Street in the old town, a classic western Hunan courtyard house displaying his life and literary achievements

• The stilt houses along both banks of the Tuo River rise straight from the water; once the lanterns light up at night they make the old town's most photographed scene
• Hong Bridge was rebuilt from a Ming-dynasty covered bridge, with a second storey holding shops and a viewing deck overlooking the whole town
• Wanming Pagoda and the North Gate tower offer two other vantage points for taking in the town's skyline from the riverside
• At the visitor centre or riverside piers you can rent a covered boat for a night cruise, the oarsman rowing past one stilt house after another

• Blood glutinous rice duck: duck blood and sticky rice steamed into a firm cake, braised with local muscovy duck — springy outside, soft inside, Phoenix's most iconic dish
• Phoenix ginger candy: hand-pulled ginger sweets, crisp with a gentle bite, a local speciality with centuries of history
• Rice tofu: a rice-paste pudding served in a sour broth with chilli and minced garlic — a tangy, spicy street snack
• Sour-broth dishes: traditional Miao sour soup simmered with cured pork shank or fish, one of the highest courtesies when hosting guests

• The old-town core is compact; you can cover the main lanes in half a day to a full day, at a noticeably slower pace than any big city
• The main riverfront street is heavily commercialised, packed with bars, silver shops and snack stalls; the deeper lanes still shelter everyday local life
