Foshan佛山

Foshan takes its name from three Buddha statues unearthed here in 398 CE, and carries over 1,300 years of urban history as one of the key cradles of Lingnan culture — Cantonese opera, lion dance, martial arts, ceramics and paper-cutting are all densely concentrated here. In the Qing dynasty, Foshan ranked alongside Hankou, Zhuxian and Jingdezhen as one of "the four great towns under heaven," a renowned hub of craft and commerce. Today it stands as a manufacturing powerhouse in the Pearl River Delta, and is the most tightly twinned city with Guangzhou in the "Guangzhou-Foshan integration" — the Guangfo metro line runs straight into Guangzhou's subway network, making cross-city commuting feel like staying in one town. Its Shunde district earned UNESCO's first-ever "City of Gastronomy" designation (Creative Cities Network) in 2014, on the strength of Cantonese cuisine's roots. Most visitors treat Foshan as a half-day add-on to a Guangzhou trip, but the Ancestral Temple's carvings and Shunde's kitchens reward a much closer look.

Lingnan Architecture & Heritage

The Ancestral Temple's "three carvings, two sculptures"

• Built in the Northern Song dynasty's Yuanfeng era, the Ancestral Temple is one of the largest, best-preserved historic building complexes in the Lingnan region

Kung Fu City

Hometown to Wong Fei-hung, Ip Man and (by ancestry) Bruce Lee

• Wong Fei-hung (Nanhai) and Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man (Chancheng) were both born in Foshan; Bruce Lee's ancestral home is Shunde's Jun'an township
• Long known as the "hometown of martial arts," Foshan is where styles like Choy Li Fut, Wing Chun and Hung Kuen either originated or flourished
• The Ip Man Hall inside the Ancestral Temple permanently displays Wing Chun history and Ip Man's personal effects

Shunde Cuisine
