Foping County sits deep in the southern foothills of the Qinling Mountains, part of Shaanxi's Hanzhong Prefecture, and ranks among the province's least-populated counties. China's fourth national giant panda survey, completed in 2013, found 67 wild pandas living inside Foping National Nature Reserve — about one for every 1.5 square kilometers, the highest population density and encounter rate recorded anywhere in the country. That's earned it the nickname "Panda County No. 1." Beyond pandas, the area is also an important habitat for golden snub-nosed monkeys, and the Qinling Museum of Man and Nature holds over 300 plant and animal specimens documenting the range's biodiversity. Since the Xi'an-Chengdu high-speed line opened, Xi'an to Foping takes as little as 40 minutes — making a town once deep in the Qinling backcountry genuinely reachable for the first time. But the town's own rhythm is still a mountain rhythm: no nightlife, no shopping malls, just cool mountain air, home-style mountain cooking, and streets that turn in early.
