Heihe黑河

Heihe is one of the cities in China physically closest to a neighboring country — at its narrowest, the Heilong River (the Amur, on the Russian side) is barely 750 meters across, with the Russian Far East city of Blagoveshchensk (locally called "Bushi") sitting right on the other bank. The two cities face each other as a genuine pair of twin border cities. In 1858, the Qing government signed the Treaty of Aigun here with Tsarist Russia, ceding over 600,000 square kilometers of territory north of the Heilong River — a history laid out in full at the Aihui Historical Exhibition Hall, one of China's 100 patriotic-education bases. In the 1960s-70s, waves of "rusticated youth" were sent here from the cities, and Heihe's Zhiqing (send-down youth) museum is the country's only exhibition hall devoted to Heilongjiang's send-down-youth history. Today Heihe has a resident population of about 1.21 million and a small, unhurried downtown with a border-trade rhythm all its own — watch the cargo cross by day, and the lights come on across the river by night. Few places make "two countries, side by side" quite so literal.

The Aigun Treaty site and send-down-youth memory

One river, two countries

• Daheihe Island Park is one of the best spots to look across the river at Blagoveshchensk's skyline
• At its narrowest, the Heilong/Amur River is only about 750m wide — one of the closest physical distances between China and a neighboring country
• The riverside park and promenade make a good evening walk, with the lights coming on across the water
• The river freezes solid into a natural ice landscape in winter; the spring thaw is a seasonal event locals watch for too

Russian flavors meet Northeastern river fish

• Doubanjiang braised salmon (豆瓣原汁大马哈鱼): the local signature dish — scored, marinated and fried until deep red and richly flavored
• Russian rye bread and sausage: easy to find and eat street-side along the Russian goods street and morning market
• Heihe's morning market has a genuinely cross-border feel — both locals and Russian visitors line up for chive pockets and blueberries
• Blueberries, honey and wild forest mushrooms are the common take-home items
