Mount Huangshan黄山

Huangshan was once called Mount Yi; legend holds that the Yellow Emperor achieved immortality here through alchemy, and in 747 CE the Tang court renamed the mountain "Huangshan" in his honor. UNESCO inscribed it as a Mixed (Cultural and Natural) World Heritage Site in 1990, one of the few mountains recognized for both natural splendor and cultural value. Strange pines, wild rock formations, seas of cloud and hot springs make up the mountain's "Four Wonders," with winter rime ice sometimes called a fifth. A widely repeated saying claims that once you've seen Huangshan, no other mountain will impress you — placing it at the summit of Chinese landscape aesthetics. Today, Tangkou is the South Gate where most visitors begin their climb, while Hongcun and Xidi — Huizhou villages about an hour away, inscribed as their own UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000 — set whitewashed walls and intricate wood, stone and brick carving right alongside the mountain's wonders, letting a single trip cover both the peaks and the villages.

• Tangkou is a small support town built around climbers — it's logistics, not a place to settle into
• Mountaintop lodging (Beihai, Baiyun, Xihai hotels, etc.) puts you right by sunrise and cloud seas, but rooms cost noticeably more and sell out fast in peak season
• Hongcun and Xidi still have real residents — early mornings and evenings, once the day-trip crowds thin, show the most authentic slice of Huizhou life
• "Tangkou" literally means "hot spring mouth" in old Chinese — the name comes from the hot springs at the mountain's base
