Huangyao Ancient Town黄姚古镇

Huangyao traces its origins to the Kaibao era of the Song dynasty (around 972 CE), was built up during the Ming's Wanli reign, and reached its peak under the Qing's Qianlong emperor — nearly a thousand years of continuous history, and one of the best-preserved Lingnan old towns in Guangxi. In 2007 it was named a national "Historic and Cultural Town" (third batch), and in 2009 it received AAAA scenic-area status, a regular fixture on "most beautiful old towns in China" lists. The Zhaoping County Gazetteer credits Qing-dynasty Huangyao with producing 11 provincial graduates, 7 metropolitan graduates and 3 prefects — an unusual density of imperial exam success for a town this size. Huangyao today is still lived-in: residents still draw water and wash vegetables at the Immortal Well, and the bean-fermenting workshops still smell the way they always have. It isn't a town emptied out for photographs.

Karst Waterscape

Stone bridge, old well, old banyans — none of them have moved in four hundred years

• Classic karst topography, with a small bridge and running water threading straight through town — the first of the "Four Wonders"
• Dailong Bridge was built in 1575 (Ming Wanli 3), Huangyao's largest surviving stone arch bridge, its slabs pinned together with iron cramps that have held for over 400 years
• The Immortal Well is five linked stone pools — drinking, vegetable-washing, laundry, hand-washing and drainage each get their own — and the water holds a steady 18°C year-round; residents still use it daily
• The "Dragon-Claw Banyan" is over 500 years old, its aerial roots gripping the rock like a dragon's claw, one of several living old-growth banyans that anchor the town

Food & Flavor

A jar of fermented black beans, cured right into the town itself

• Huangyao's fermented black beans date to the early Ming and became a tribute ingredient for the imperial kitchen under the Qing's Qianlong emperor, made from local black soybeans and Immortal Well water using old handcraft methods
• Hand-cut rice noodles topped with beef brisket, pork trotter or braised meat are the everyday bowl around town
• Mugwort, pumpkin and purple-sweet-potato rice cakes cover both sweet and savory — an easy snack while wandering
• Huangjing (Solomon's seal root) and its wine, alongside plum and osmanthus wine, round out the town's tonic specialties, one of Huangyao's "three treasures"

Everyday Life

Small enough to see in half a day, slow enough to deserve a night

• The core old town is small enough to walk in full, but slowing down to read the plaques, the well and the banyans is what makes it worth the trip
• Winter (Dec-Feb) sees the fewest visitors, and guesthouses often come with underfloor heating or electric blankets — the quietest window to experience the town
• The town runs on guesthouses, home-style restaurants and black-bean/Solomon's-seal workshops — there's essentially no coworking or shared-office scene here; this isn't a remote-work base
• Guposhan National Forest Park is about an hour away and makes a good half-day-to-full-day nature extension
