Huishan Old Town惠山古镇

Huishan Ancient Town sits at the foot of Xishan and Huishan hills on Wuxi's western edge, grown up around the 1,500-year-old Huishan Temple and a spring ranked "second-best under heaven." Inside its lanes stand 118 surviving ancestral halls belonging to more than 80 clan surnames — the largest, densest cluster of ancestral halls left in any Chinese old town, collectively listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Site in 2006. Tucked deeper inside is Jichang Garden, one of Jiangnan's finest classical gardens; local gazetteers record the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors staying here repeatedly on their southern tours, and Beijing's Summer Palace later built its Xiequyuan garden as a direct copy of this one. Huishan clay figurines are the town's other calling card — the round-faced "Big Fortune Boy" figure has evolved over centuries, and the Kengo Kuma–designed China Clay Figurine Museum now holds nearly 5,000 pieces spanning thirteen regional schools and over 400 years. Unlike many Jiangnan old towns, Huishan charges no entry fee and sits one metro stop from downtown — the easiest add-on to any Wuxi city itinerary.

Ancestral Halls

Everyday Life

Free to enter, and a spot locals still visit themselves

• Free to enter overall — Jichang Garden, Huishan Temple and the clay-figurine museum sell a combo ticket for the paid sights inside
• Reachable directly on Metro Line 4 — the easiest old-town-grade sight to reach from anywhere in Wuxi
• Almost no long-term rentals inside the old town itself; most people day-trip from a base in central Wuxi
• Early morning and early evening draw the fewest visitors — also when locals come to stroll and drink tea
