Zili Village Diaolou开平自力村碉楼

The Kaiping Diaolou and Villages were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007 — one of Guangdong's few World Heritage sites. From the late 19th century, large numbers of Kaiping locals left for the US, Canada, Malaysia and beyond to make a living, sending money home through "yinxin" remittance letters. To guard that hard-earned wealth against floods and bandits, overseas families financed a concentrated wave of multi-story tower construction through the 1920s and '30s, fusing Greek columns, Roman arches, Islamic domes and Lingnan brick-and-tile roofs into one of the densest clusters of East-meets-West vernacular architecture anywhere. The listing covers four representative village clusters — Sanmenli, Zili, Jinjiangli and Majianglong — of which Zili Village is the one most visitors reach first, its 15 surviving towers scattered among rice paddies, lotus ponds and bamboo groves. Most people assume the towers are stand-alone sights; in fact, many remain part of daily village life today.

East-Meets-West Tower Architecture

• Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007, spanning the Sanmenli, Zili, Jinjiangli and Majianglong village clusters
• Most towers went up in the 1920s–30s, financed almost entirely by remittances from overseas Chinese

• Chikan Ancient Town's clay-pot rice is the local star — sausage rice, char siu rice, duck rice and eel rice, in rotation
• Tofu corners and beef offal are staples at everyday snack stalls
• Tangkou glutinous rice cakes (mugwort or zongzi-style) are a traditional sweet, once reserved for festivals
• Restaurants are thin on the ground — most cluster in Kaiping's town center and Chikan's old street, with limited choice out among the diaolou themselves

Everyday Life

Rural scale — you plan your own transport

• The towers sit scattered across Tangkou township and the surrounding countryside — there are no taxis between villages, so most visitors charter a car or join a tour
• Guesthouses cluster in Tangkou town (about 2km from Zili Village) and are limited in number — book ahead in peak season
• In recent years Tangkou has drawn young creative entrepreneurs back to run guesthouses and studios as the old town's revival continues
• Kaiping's town center has fuller amenities (hospitals, supermarkets, banks) but sits 30–40 minutes by car from the diaolou sites
