Climb a wall older than Badaling and watch the Ling River bend around the old city below — Linhai turns 1,600 years of prefecture life into something as simple as a steaming bowl of wheat noodles on Ziyang Street.

Why it's special

Why It's Special

The wall in front of the old Taizhou prefecture gate is 1,600 years old — and it's still clocked in every day.

Linhai — once known as Taizhou — has served as the seat of Taizhou prefecture since the Eastern Jin dynasty, a continuous run of over 1,600 years. The wall you see today, known as the Jiangnan ("south of the Yangtze") Great Wall, dates back to the Jin, was expanded through the Tang and Song, and was reinforced by Ming-dynasty general Qi Jiguang during his campaigns against Japanese pirate raiders. About 5,000m survives today out of an original 6,000-plus, serving both as a military fortification and a flood barrier against the Ling River — one of the most complete surviving prefecture-city walls in southern China. The surrounding Taizhou Prefecture City cultural tourism zone now carries National 5A status. Compared with Suzhou or Hangzhou — Jiangnan cities whose old towns have become near-standardized tourist circuits — Linhai's old town still feels like a working neighborhood: homes sit right behind the wall, and the snack queues on Ziyang Street are ones locals actually stand in, with far fewer tourists in line.

Culture

The city wall known locally as "Jiangnan's Badaling"

  • The wall dates to the Jin dynasty, was expanded through the Tang and Song, and reinforced during Qi Jiguang's Ming-era anti-pirate campaigns — about 5,000m survives, among the most complete prefecture-city walls left in southern China
  • Local tourism materials call it "Jiangnan's Badaling"; local lore credits Qi Jiguang's defensive know-how here with later informing repairs to the Great Wall further north (a folk account — treat the exact history as unverified this batch)
  • Public sources list Linhai's wall alongside Nanjing, Xi'an and Jingzhou's as part of a joint "Ming-Qing City Walls" bid on China's UNESCO tentative list
  • The wall serves double duty as a military fortification and a flood barrier against the Ling River — climb it for views over the old town's grey-tiled roofs and the river beyond

Food & Flavor

One street, over a hundred snacks

  • Maixia ("wheat shrimp") is Linhai's signature snack — a thick wheat batter dropped into broth to form shrimp-shaped , topped with dried shrimp, beef, pork or mushroom
  • Ziyang Street runs 1,080m and preserves a dense cluster of Ming-Qing buildings and century-old shops — local reports put the snack count on the street at over a hundred
  • Yongquan mandarin oranges, grown in Linhai's Yongquan township, are one of Zhejiang's best-known citrus brands — best in season roughly Oct–Dec
  • Black-rice mochi, seaweed pastries and fried egg-white "sheep's tail" sweets round out the prefecture's traditional afternoon-tea spread

Everyday Life

A county-level city's scale — plenty of street life, modest infrastructure

  • The old town — the wall, Ziyang Street, East Lake and Jinshan Hill — is compact enough to walk in a half-day to a full day
  • As a county-level city, coworking spaces and a digital-nomad scene are essentially nonexistent
  • English signage and foreigner-facing services are limited outside Ziyang Street — most everyday scenes run in Chinese only
  • Taizhou Bay New District (around Jiaojiang/Huangyan) is the prefecture's more modern new town, a sharp contrast in pace to Linhai's old quarter
