Sanya三亚

Sanya sits at 18°N latitude, the second-southernmost prefecture-level city on the Chinese mainland after Sansha — genuinely tropical in a way few Chinese cities are. The name behind "Tianya Haijiao" ("the ends of the earth") traces to Qing-dynasty inscriptions carved into coastal rocks near what was then Yazhou, today's Sanya: in imperial times, this was a place of exile, thought to sit at the edge of the world. Today it's a gateway of the Hainan Free Trade Port — the offshore duty-free policy in effect since 2011 has made Sanya International Duty Free City one of the largest single duty-free malls anywhere, and from 2003 onward Sanya repeatedly hosted the Miss World finals, briefly becoming shorthand for international beauty pageants. The desolation of exile is long gone; today's Sanya is Chinese shorthand for "summer, all year round."

• The Coconut Dream Corridor is a roughly 20km waterfront promenade lined with palms — the city's agreed-upon spot for sunset
