Why it's special

Why It's Special

Less bustling than Zhouzhuang and less secluded than Luzhi, Tongli nestles garden philosophy and age‑old folk traditions amid its waterways and ancient bridges.

Tongli sits beside Lake Tai and east of the Grand Canal, part of Suzhou's Wujiang District, with over 1,000 years of history as a town — one of Jiangnan's six great water towns alongside Zhouzhuang, Luzhi, Xitang, Nanxun and Wuzhen. Its name comes from splitting and restacking the characters of its old name, "Futu"; canals crisscross the town and stone bridges are everywhere, earning it the nickname "Oriental Venice." Tuisi Yuan, built here between 1885 and 1887, was funded by Ren Lansheng after he was stripped of office and sent home, and designed by the painter Yuan Long — its name drawn from the Zuo Zhuan's line on serving loyally in office and reflecting on one's faults in retreat. In 2001, Tuisi Yuan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an extension to the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, alongside Canglang Ting, Shizi Lin and Ou Yuan. At the town center, the Three Bridges — Taiping, Jili and Changqing — stand in a triangle where three canals meet, and locals still make a point of crossing all three at a full-month celebration, a wedding or a 60th birthday for good luck. Tongli's crowds sit somewhere between Zhouzhuang's bustle and Luzhi's quiet — a solid, classic stop on a Suzhou water-town day trip.

Cross three bridges, bank the good luck

  • Taiping, Jili and Changqing bridges stand in a triangle where three canals meet — the town's central landmark
  • Locals still make a special trip to cross all three bridges at a full-month celebration, a wedding or a 60th birthday, for good luck
  • Ming-Qing houses line the canals on both banks, and a wooden gondola is the most pleasant way to get around
Honest fit

Honest fit

A classic half-day on a Suzhou itinerary, not a long-stay base

  • Good fit: first-time Jiangnan visitors who want classical gardens and water-town ritual in one stop
  • Half a day to a full day covers it comfortably — easy to fold into a Suzhou or Shanghai multi-city trip
  • Lodging inside the old town is mostly small guesthouses; long-stay infrastructure like coworking or a nomad community is essentially absent
  • Crowds at popular spots like the Three Bridges rise noticeably on holidays — go off-peak if you can
