Tonglu桐庐

The Fuchun River runs straight through it — part of the real-world scenery in the scroll "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains." Lately, one abandoned old house after another has turned into a village café, giving old-town slow living a new shape.

Why it's special

Why It's Special

A 600-year-old landscape scroll, a river that still runs the same course, and a wave of young owners turning old houses into cafés — three layers stacked in one small city.

Tonglu sits in northwestern Zhejiang, with the Fuchun River running straight through it — in 2015 it ranked first nationwide among county-level cities for resident well-being. The Yuan-dynasty painter Huang Gongwang spent his late years at a hermitage called "Xiaodongtian" beside the Fuchun River (in what's now Fuyang district's Miaoshanwu), painting "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" over several years — a scroll depicting the river's scenery from Fuyang down to Tonglu. Tonglu's stretch of river is part of what that scroll actually shows. In recent years, riverside villages like Shen'ao, Difu and Meirong have taken up rural-art renovation: old houses turned into cafés, an old oil press turned into a viral "village café," giving these once-quiet villages a new way to be visited. The trade-off is real too — the villages are spread out, reachable mainly by taxi or hired car, at a much slower pace than a dense old-town circuit.

Fuchun River scenery

Fuchun River scenery

The river scenery the scroll actually depicts

  • Yan Ziling's Fishing Terrace: where the Han-dynasty hermit Yan Guang once fished, on the Fuchun's Qilitong stretch
  • Chuiyun Tongtianhe: an underground river ride plus a glass-floor water slide
  • Huang Gongwang's hermitage was in Fuyang's Miaoshanwu — Tonglu's stretch is part of the scenery the scroll depicts, not the painting's birthplace itself

Don't miss

Don't Miss

Not a checklist — the handful of things in this riverside town worth setting aside real time for.

Eat & bring home

Eat & Bring Home

"Tonglu flavor" centers on rice cakes, country dishes and river fish — many dishes use cured meat or lard, so check the notes before ordering.

VegetarianMedium-Easy

Plenty of tofu-based options, but rice cakes and country dishes often carry cured meat — confirm before ordering.

HalalHard

Halal options are limited — search for a clearly halal restaurant ahead.

No porkNeeds care

Pork and cured meat are common in local cooking — state your restriction before ordering.

Know before you order
  • Tonglu rice cakes often contain cured meat — ask if there's a vegetarian filling.
  • Tofu skin and brine tofu are relatively vegetarian-friendly fallbacks.
  • "Swallow" pastries and fermented rice-wine buns contain gluten — worth noting if you're sensitive.
The village cafés and old-house renovations are mostly run by young locals themselves — a better place to spend than a chain souvenir shop at a scenic gate. A coffee or a handmade piece here supports the village's actual revival, not just a photogenic stop.

Reality check

Reality Check

The honest take

If you want a dense, checklist-style old-town tour, Tonglu may feel too spread out. If you want to slow down by the river and watch a village get lived-in again by a new generation, this is the right fit.

Don't claim the painting as purely a "Tonglu thing"

Huang Gongwang's hermitage was in Fuyang's Miaoshanwu — Tonglu's river stretch is only part of what the scroll depicts. Adjust expectations; don't expect a "birthplace of the painting" museum here.

Plan transport for the village circuit

There's no dense public transport between Shen'ao, Difu, Meirong and the other villages — arrange a hired car or taxi route ahead of time, not on the fly.

Confirm tickets and hours on-site

Ticket prices and hours at Yan Ziling's Terrace, Chuiyun Tongtianhe and similar sights shift with season and policy — recheck on the day of your visit.

  • Yan Ziling's Terrace runs different winter/summer hours (Nov-Mar 08:30-15:30, Apr-Oct 08:30-16:00)
  • The glass-floor rafting may pause for rain or winter; the cave ride runs year-round at a constant temperature
  • Some village cafés use ticket-redemption entry to manage crowds (e.g. Mohua Siji) — check ahead in peak season

Confirm foreign-guest capacity ahead

Village boutique lodges vary a lot in style — confirm foreign-guest registration capacity and current 2026 rates directly with the lodge, rather than booking on photos alone.

In China, hotels normally handle your registration; for guesthouses, you usually register at the nearest police station within 24 hours of arrival.

  • Enjoy river scenery and a literary/artistic backstory (even if it's not the painting's literal birthplace)
  • Are curious about village revival and the young-people-led café scene
  • Are happy to hire a car between spread-out villages rather than chase a dense checklist

😟 You might be let down if you…

  • Expect a dense old-town where everything is walkable
  • Assume Tonglu is the literal "birthplace" of the famous painting
  • Only have half a day: the sights are too spread out to cover in that time

Travel responsibly

Travel Responsibly

A river that made it into a 600-year-old scroll deserves to be treated just as carefully by this generation.

01 · Protect the Fuchun River

  • Don't litter along the riverbank or from the boat
  • Follow staff instructions on cruises and rafting — don't enter the water on your own
  • Don't feed or fish the river's wildlife

02 · Respect the village residents

  • Many hall houses in villages like Shen'ao are still lived in — ask before entering
  • Get consent before photographing residents, especially elders and children
  • Don't treat a village café or old house as just a photo backdrop — sit down and stay a while

03 · Support local cafés and craft

  • Favor locally run spaces like HOYI Coffee or the Shishe Village Café
  • Buy gifts at a local shop or established brand rather than a stall by the scenic gate
  • Stay quiet and considerate at events like the Shen'ao opera week
