Weizhou Island涠洲岛

Weizhou Island sits about 21 nautical miles due south of Beihai, covering 24.74 square kilometres — China's largest and geologically youngest volcanic island, and Guangxi's biggest island overall. Built up over several eruption cycles, with the most recent activity dated to roughly 7,000-10,000 years ago, it's home to over 2,000 households and more than 16,000 permanent residents, over 85% of them Hakka. Nineteenth-century French missionaries built the island's Gothic Catholic church. Beyond the volcanic cliffs and reef, its near-shore waters are also one of the few stretches of the Chinese coast where Bryde's whales have been reliably sighted. One small island holds a geological wonder, a migrant settlement and a whale story, all at once.

• Crocodile Rock (Yeyu Shan) preserves an intact volcanic crater and sea-eroded cliffs — the boardwalk loop takes 1.5-2 hours
• Wucai Beach is built from volcanic rock and tide pools, at its most colorful once the tide goes out — also the island's best tide-pooling spot
• Dishuidanping takes its name from water that seeps year-round down its cliff face, striping the rock in multiple colors — best at sunset
• The last eruption dates to roughly 7,000-10,000 years ago; the island itself is a living geology textbook

Culture

• Over 85% of residents are Hakka, descendants of settlers who arrived during the Qing dynasty
• The Sacred Heart Cathedral dates to the late 19th century, built from coral rock and volcanic stone in French Gothic style
• Entry is free, though weekends and holidays sometimes require a scan-in check
• Islanders keep a distinct Hakka dialect and a rhythm split between fishing and farming

From sea cucumber to bananas, an island's sweet and briny best

• Sea cucumber (the spiky "huaci" variety) is one of China's "eight treasures of the sea," and Weizhou is a key source
• Blanched sand worms, salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp and ginger-scallion flower crab are table staples, best straight off the day's catch
• "Volcanic island" bananas grow in potassium-rich volcanic ash soil irrigated with mineral spring water, sweeter than the mainland norm
• Once the South China Sea's summer fishing moratorium lifts each year (typically midnight Aug 16), the returning boats bring in the season's freshest catch
