Yanji延吉

Yanji is the capital of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and the largest Korean-populated city in China—the prefecture was founded on September 3, 1952, one of the earliest minority autonomous areas in the People's Republic. The city is small and unhurried, yet it preserves the Korean language, cuisine, dress, and etiquette with unusual completeness: bilingual Chinese-Korean street signs line every block, cold-noodle shops and barbecue grills appear on virtually every street, and the morning riverside market that opens at five is far more down-to-earth than any attraction. It is also one of the nearest gateway cities to the north slope of Changbai Mountain, and heading west strings together the Tumen, Longjing, and Hunchun border route where China, North Korea, and Russia meet. Many visitors come in with the slightly exaggerated label "little Seoul of the Northeast," but what truly lingers is the clean, calm, unhurried rhythm of an ordinary border town.

• The city is compact—most areas are reachable within half an hour by taxi or bus
• Coworking spaces are virtually nonexistent, but there are plenty of laptop-friendly cafés, well suited to quiet solo long stays
• Yanji West Station and Chaoyangchuan Airport are two different places—high-speed rail only serves Yanji West Station, so don't mix them up
• Winters are long and cold but heating keeps interiors cozy, while cool summers are the locals' proud selling point as a summer escape
