Yongding永定

On July 7, 2008, UNESCO's 32nd World Heritage Committee session inscribed the "Fujian Tulou" on the World Heritage List — China's 26th UNESCO cultural site, made up of 46 earthen buildings across six clusters and four standalone towers in Yongding, Nanjing and Hua'an counties. Yongding alone accounts for five of those components: the Chuxi, Hongkeng and Gaobei clusters, plus two standalone towers, Yanxiang Lou and Zhenfu Lou. This is home to Chengqi Lou, the so-called "King of Round Houses" in the Gaobei cluster — 73m across, four concentric rings, once housing close to 80 families — and Zhencheng Lou, the "Tulou Prince" in the Hongkeng cluster, laid out internally on a bagua (eight-trigram) plan. In the Chuxi cluster, a nearly 600-year-old Jiqing Lou sits in the same village as the roughly 30-year-old Shanqing Lou, letting you see the full span of Tulou construction history in one glance. Most visitors treat this as a photo-op destination, but what actually makes people stop is that Hakka families still live inside these buildings — hanging laundry, running a small shop off the ground floor. These aren't restored relics; they're lived-in homes.

Food & Flavor

Hakka cooking: salty, savory and generous with oil

• Cai gan kou rou: pork belly steamed with Yongding's dried preserved mustard greens — tender, not greasy
• Yongding beef balls: hand-pounded to a springy bounce — named one of western Fujian's "Eight Fresh Flavors" in 2015, listed as a Fujian provincial intangible-heritage craft in 2022
• Taro dumplings (yuzi bao): a taro-and-sweet-potato-starch skin around a pork, shiitake and bamboo-shoot filling, good hot or at room temperature
• Hakka stuffed tofu: tofu hollowed out, stuffed with seasoned pork, pan-fried then braised — a fixture on any hospitality table

Honest fit

A deep-culture stop, not a place to base yourself long-term

• The clusters sit several to a dozen-plus km apart along winding hill roads with no efficient public transit between them — hiring a car is the way to go
• The core clusters (Hongkeng, Gaobei) draw the tour-group crowds; early morning or late afternoon in the off-season is quieter
• There's no coworking space or nomad infrastructure here — this is a short deep-culture visit, not a long-stay option
