Quick answer
When is the best time to visit China?
**April–May and September–October** are the sweet spots for most of China: mild weather, clear skies, moderate crowds. Summers are hot and rainy in the south; winters are bitter in the north but magical in Harbin (ice festival season). Avoid the three Golden Weeks — Spring Festival, May 1–5, and Oct 1–7 — when prices spike and attractions sell out.

The sweet spots
For most of China, April–May and September–October are the sweet spots: mild temperatures, clear skies, and moderate crowds. Spring brings blossoms to Beijing and Luoyang; autumn paints Huangshan and Jiuzhaigou in red and gold.
| Season | North (Beijing, Xi'an) | South (Shanghai, Guangzhou) | West (Chengdu, Yunnan) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar–May | Warming up, dusty winds in March | Pleasant, occasional rain | Best for Yunnan; still cold in Tibet-adjacent areas |
| Jun–Aug | Hot but manageable | Hot, humid, typhoon risk on the coast | Monsoon in the mountains; great for grasslands |
| Sep–Oct | Golden — the best window | Warm, drier | Clear mountain views |
| Nov–Feb | Bitter cold, but Harbin's ice festival | Mild winters, cheapest hotels | Many mountain roads close |
Avoid the three Golden Weeks
Spring Festival (late Jan/Feb), May 1–5, and Oct 1–7 are the three Golden Weeks. Hundreds of millions travel: trains sell out, hotel prices double or triple, and the Great Wall looks like a subway at rush hour. Plan around them, not through them.
If you can only pick by region
- First trip, classic sights → September–October. Beijing and Xi'an at their best, comfortable everywhere else.
- Mountains and lakes (Huangshan, Zhangjiajie, Jiuzhaigou) → late September–October for color, April–May for mist.
- Harbin ice and snow → December–February, and only then. Pack for −20°C.
- Tropical Hainan/Sanya → November–March, when the rest of China shivers.
China spans tropical to subarctic, so 'best time' always depends on where you're going. Check the seasonal notes on each place page — that's what they're for.
