Transactions under ¥200 are fee-free on both apps. Above that a ~3% processing fee applies, and your own bank may add its own foreign-transaction fee on top. Policies have loosened before — check before a long trip.
If card binding fails
- Confirm your card supports 3-D Secure — this is the most common blocker.
- Try the other app: Amex links to Alipay more reliably than to WeChat Pay.
- Remove and re-add the card; make sure the billing address matches your bank's record exactly.
- Still stuck? Change a small amount of cash at the airport as backup — a few stalls and taxis remain cash/QR-only.
Carry a little cash anyway
¥200–500 in cash covers the rare cash-only situation (small stalls, some taxis, rural areas). Everything else — restaurants, museums, metro, high-speed rail — is QR-first and foreign-card friendly.
